Isn’t funny how whenever we have some extra Rands in our pockets we find another place to put it?
And no I don’t mean a savings account, fixed deposit account or even a 32 day account. I mean we turn that extra money we had into more debt that we didn’t have.
When we earn more we tend to spend more.
We start running up our clothing accounts and credit card debt. Social drinkers no longer buy their normal brand of alcohol. No, they buy the more expensive kind because they can afford it now. The smoker’s change their brand of cigarettes from the cheaper brand to the more expensive brand and the list goes on.
But why you ask?
Well nowadays, people are more worried about what other people think of their financial status than anything else.
People compete and measure themselves up against others who are doing well for themselves to make it seem like they are also doing well. They will buy the latest cars and wear the biggest name brands in watches and clothing just because their friends or family members are doing it.
And it doesn’t just stop there. No, it goes much deeper than that but I am sure everyone gets the picture.
The reality is that some people purposefully want to outclass others. It’s like they want to prove to others that they are way better off than you.
It has become more about keeping up with the Joneses than looking after their future.
But just imagine if all of us saved those extra Rands we’ve received over the years, what could we have done with it and where would we have been right now?
So next time we receive that little bit extra, let’s try to put it away so that it can actually grow.
And remember that we were doing just fine without it in the first place.
Stay true to yourself.
